REVIEW: "Death Ritual" By YATRA (Stoner Doom)

Stoner Doom/Grimoire Records/Released Jan 4th, 2018

It’s nice to hear a stoner doom band that isn’t trying to push the absolute limits of distortion, song length, and slow tempos. That said, Yatra exemplify some of the other traits that turn people away from the genre. Death Ritual is lacking in diversity as all its tracks are of a similar tempo and vibe. With the same plodding guitar tone and chords being used for each track. “Sacred Flower” is the best of the bunch with it having a decent hook and a tribal drum beat that switches things up. But the vocal performance is average growling that fits the music’s dark vibe, but doesn’t grab your attention. Yatra’s debut likely won’t interest many beyond the most die hard of doom fans as Death Ritual is a lackluster effort at best.

Score: 2/5
