"Self Titled" By CHURCH&STATES (Lexington, KY)/Alternative Rock/Released 2015
Dark tones, mellow instrumentals, and a focus on ambiance mark the debut E.P of Lexington, KY music act CHURCH&STATES. New to performing live in the Lexington area, the heart of the band has been around since at least spring of 2015. And is lead by singer-songwriter Tab Caudill and guitarist Nolan Mason.
The group’s style is based in indie rock with a big focus on moody atmosphere in the instrumentals. This allows Caudill’s skilled vocal prowess to lead the melodies who has a similar tone to Hayley Williams of Paramore fame. The group draws influence from alt-rock legends Radiohead and Queens of the Stone Age as well as modern alternative acts along the lines of Lana Del Ray, Florence+The Machine, and Arctic Monkeys. This results in a unique blend of dark indie pop rock that has its own distinct flavor.
The E.P. was recorded with pristine quality production which is perfect for a band of this style. Often high level production can detract from the music but it only amplifies the groups skills as the vocals are cleanly delivered and allowed to shine. And the effects laden guitar work reverbs and echoes effortlessly. Each track of the six song EP is strong and consistent. “Lisa’s Moan” is the opening song that features a trance-like backing vocal and clean, peaceful guitar work. “Only Human” is a more folksy sounding tune with a mix of driving acoustic guitar and echoed, country inspired electric guitar work. Another highlight is the song “What You Are” which is a favorite off the record. The song contains darker and more aggressive guitar work and some of Caudill’s most powerful vocals of the work.
CHURCH&STATES is jumping headfirst into the music scene with a bang. They have all the pieces needed to become a strong success in the Kentucky region and beyond. Unique, artful instrumentation, a frontwoman with a golden voice, and production quality that rivals anything you could hear on the radio. The future looks bright for the band and many should be looking forward to future releases from this talented group.
